Imagination. We all have it right? Me? I’m not so sure. For as long as I can remember I have never understood “playing pretend” or “make believe.” As a child I had friends who wanted to play house or pretend to be princesses in far away lands and I can recall struggling through it. Being imaginative takes a lot of confidence as you are doing something that is not who you normally are. For me it left me uncomfortable.
As I got older it came up less although would pop up from time to time, to this day some can’t understand how I’ve never seen the movies or read anything Harry Potter or Star Wars related. Sorry guys, not interested. When I became pregnant I worried that as my child got older my lack of imagination would hinder our connection through play.
About a year ago, at age two, I really started to notice my daughter’s imagination. She can play for hours in her kitchen, cooking and baking anything and everything and bringing it too me to “taste.” She’s the chef, she’s the waitress, she plays all roles. She loves dressing up and pretending she’s different princesses, a doctor, a fireman, whichever outfit she puts on she fully commits to.
I have been shocked and amazed witnessing her imagination in person. Sometimes I can’t believe her ability to create something purely out of thought and turn it into hours of fun. As Moms we can get so caught up in our limitations and think our children may have them as well. Luckily this was not the case. It’s been really fun for her to try to teach me to “play pretend.” Before I had children I knew I would teach them all sorts of things but I had no idea how much they would teach me.
Hope it’s a great week! I have loved all the comments and DMs I have been receiving, it’s been wonderful to connect with all of you. ❤️
