Hi there! We recently celebrated my daughter’s first birthday! She was born in July 2020 so needless to say it wasn’t exactly the most celebratory time, so I was so excited to be able to throw an outdoor party for her! I like to create a budget for parties because I can always keep adding things if I don’t. 🙂 One of the the things that wasn’t in the budget were personalized cookies. So, I decided to make my own!
First, I want to stress the time commitment these require. I made 45 cookies and easily spent 5 hours on them! So factor that in before you decide to make them! To get started I spent some time on Pinterest getting ideas. Once I decided what I wanted to make, I bought a few cookie cutters. To make things as easy as possible I also bought this decorating tip set. It has tips for writing, flowers, piping borders all of it. I also bought a few icing bags. For coloring the icing I used this set and the colors turned out great! Just be careful a *little* goes along way!
In terms of the cookie, I think you can use any recipe, just make sure you chill the dough! For the icing there’s several options and the biggest thing is finding an icing that will dry hard. Royal icing is a brand that works very well, but beware, you may need to add a little vanilla for taste. This recipe from Sugar Spun Run is awesome and also dries completely, so you are able to stack or package your cookies. I did a combo of both, the Sugar Spun Run recipe for the base of the cookie, and Royal Icing for the decorations. It worked very well!
To package them I put them in clear plastic bags with ties and placed them in a beautiful basket with a bow. It was so nice to have an individual dessert – and who doesn’t love a cookie?! 🙂
